The AAMDSIF Bone Marrow Failure: A condition that occurs when the bone marrow stops making enough healthy blood cells. The most common of these rare diseases are aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Bone marrow failure can be acquired (begin any time in life) or can be… Symposium - Disease Updates and Health Equity will focus on the most recent advances in pathophysiology: Functional changes in the bodies that are associated with or result from disease or injury. , diagnosis and clinical management of aplastic anemia: (ay-PLASS-tik uh-NEE_mee-uh) A rare and serious condition in which the bone marrow fails to make enough blood cells - red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The agenda includes diagnosis and treatment updates for aplastic anemia, PNH, and MDS and panel discussions addressing gaps in patient care for patients with bone marrow failure. Topics will include:

  • Providing guideline concordant care in the community - delivering evidence-based care in the context of access challenges, insurance constraints and patient preferences
  • Infection in patients with bone marrow failure - mortality, morbidity and financial burden of infections in these patients
  • Reshaping MDS care through integration of quality of life parameters - psychosocial support, symptom management and palliative care integration
  • Addressing barriers to care – ageism, geographic and cultural challenges, delays in diagnosis, long term supportive care: Care given to improve the quality of life, or comfort, of a person with a chronic illness. Supportive care treats the symptoms rather than the underlying cause of a disease. The goal is to help the patient feel better.
