My main academic and clinical objective is to, if not cure, at least contribute to significantly better outcomes for patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes: (my-eh-lo-diss-PLASS-tik SIN-dromez) A group of disorders where the bone marrow does not work well, and the bone marrow cells fail to make enough healthy blood cells. Myelo refers to the bone marrow. Dysplastic means abnormal growth or development. People with MDS have low blood cell count for at… (MDS). I am the Chief of the Section of MDS in the Department of Leukemia at MD Anderson Cancer Center. I have built this into the largest clinical program of its class. One hundred percent of my research and clinical effort is devoted to patients with MDS.
