Richard Childs, M.D. is the Clinical Director of the NHLBI Division of Intramural Research (DIR). In this role, he is responsible for the oversight of the clinical research: A type of research that involves individual persons or a group of people. There are three types of clinical research. Dr. Childs is also a senior investigator in the Laboratory of Transplantation Immunotherapy where his research focuses on allogeneic stem cell transplantation and tumor immunology to treat aplastic anemia: (ay-PLASS-tik uh-NEE_mee-uh) A rare and serious condition in which the bone marrow fails to make enough blood cells - red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Dr. Childs received his M.D. in 1991 from Georgetown University and completed his internship, residency, and a Chief Residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida. Subsequently, Dr. Childs arrived at the NIH to complete a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute followed by a fellowship in hematology at NHLBI.
