Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS)

My research interest is focused on the development of novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of hematological malignancies. Towards this aim, I am serving in three different leadership positions: 1) I am the director of the UNM Bone Marrow Transplant and Cell Therapy Program, which has brought autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant technology to New Mexico, with the intent of introducing allogeneic stem cell transplant and both CAR-T therapy in the near future. Dr. Rafael Bejar, MD, PhD, is board-certified in internal medicine, oncology, and hematology, with a special interest in hematologic malignancies (blood cancers). He specializes in the care of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and related blood disorders. Dr. Bejar has established a MDS Center of Excellence at UC San Diego Health focused on providing the best diagnostic tools, supportive care, clinical trials, and medical expertise in one center. Dr. Abel received his MD and MPH from Columbia University in 2000. He completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and his hematology/oncology fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In 2007, he joined Dana-Farber and is a member of the Hematologic Malignancies staff, as well as the Center for Outcomes and Policy Research.

Dr. Abdel-Wahab is a hematologist/oncologist who specializes in the research and treatment of patients with a variety of myeloid malignancies, which include myeloproliferative neoplasms, myelodysplastic syndromes, and acute myeloid leukemia.
