COVID-19 vaccination for hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has changed the world over the last year and impacted almost every part of our lives. In particular, patients with hematologic malignancies have been significantly affected by this crisis at every stage of their treatment. Delays in diagnosis and increased waiting times for transplants and therapy have become common occurrences. Patients with hematologic malignancies are also more likely to suffer from severe COVID-19, leading to a greater mortality rate.

Myelodysplastic syndrome/Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MDS/MPNs) are molecularly complex, clinically heterogeneous diseases that exhibit proliferative and dysplastic features. Diagnostic criteria use clinical, pathologic, and genomic features to distinguish between disease entities, though considerable clinical and genetic overlap persists. MDS/MPNs are associated with a poor prognosis, save for MDS/MPN with ring sideroblasts and thrombocytosis, which can behave more indolently.

Cellular aging in hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is important in the context of immune reconstitution and age-related complications. Recently, several DNA-methylation (DNAm)-based biomarkers of aging known as "epigenetic clocks" have been introduced as novel tools to predict cellular age.
