Position / Title
U.S. Representative
Award Year
2008

Congresswoman Matsui has been a leading champion in the U.S. Congress for research funding on bone marrow failure: A condition that occurs when the bone marrow stops making enough healthy blood cells. The most common of these rare diseases are aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). Bone marrow failure can be acquired (begin any time in life) or can be… diseases. Her commitment is inspired by the memory of her husband, Congressman Robert Matsui, who battled MDS while representing the same district that she now represents in the United States House of Representatives, the Fifth Congressional District of California.
