How to Use PubMed

The PubMed website has extensive help tools, but below are some guidelines:

How to Access PubMed

  1. Type www.pubmed.gov into your browser. This automatically redirects to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
  2. Type key words into the search box
  3. To sort the results, look directly under the search box. Select “Display Settings.” The third column called “Sort by” will allow you to filter your results to most recent, most relevant, etc.

To Read Articles

  1. Click on the title of the article (the page should direct you to the abstract)
  2. The abstract will give you a brief overview of what the article covers.
  3. On the top right hand corner (under the gray header box) should be a small box that will link you to the full text article. There a few ways to access the full article:
    1. Several articles may have a “free full text” link, where you may find the journal article for free
    2. You may purchase the journal article
    3. You may check with your health care providers to see if they could provide you with access to the article

Disclaimer: Most of these articles are written in scientific language and could be fairly difficult to understand.
