After Misdiagnosis by Renowned Institution, Local Woman Gets New Lease on Life Thanks to Specialist at UC San Diego Health

ROCKVILLE, MD – Seventy-four year old Anne Wells led a very active, independent life until two-and-a-half years ago, when she suddenly became so weak that she could no longer take care of herself. “It was a very scary time for me, but even more so for my children,” she said.

Her daughter came from Colorado to look after her, but when she couldn’t wake her mother up one day and had to call 911, the family decided mom needed to go to a prominent medical institution thousands of miles away to get some answers. After a two-week hospital stay and myriad blood tests, Anne was told she had an allergy. She certainly knew how some people suffered with severe allergies, but she had never been one of them and never thought an allergy could be as bad as she felt. She went home fearing the worst.

That’s when providence intervened and she discovered Rafael Bejar, MD, PhD, a world-class hematologist and oncologist at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health in La Jolla. Bejar quickly diagnosed Anne with MDS (myelodysplastic syndromes), a rare bone marrow disorder and a form of blood cancer. She has since had 31 treatments of the specialized chemo for MDS, and now has no symptoms whatsoever. She’s driving again and has returned to her aerobics and yoga classes.

Anne Wells will be among the 150+ families attending a free patient and family conference being held by the Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation (AAMDSIF) – a full day of educational sessions that enables patients, families and caregivers to learn from leading health professionals and connect with each other. It’s a unique opportunity for those living with aplastic anemia, MDS or PNH (paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria).

Sessions will be available in English and Spanish, with on-site translators for facilitating group discussions and family participation.
