On Oct. 16, Conor Gomes became one of the three in 1 million Americans diagnosed each year with a bone marrow disease called aplastic anemia. It occurs when bone marrow fails to produce enough new blood cells because of stem cell damage. The condition can be inherited or acquired. In most cases, if acquired, the exact cause is unknown, as it is with Conor's illness.
