San Antonio Hope, Steps & A Cure: March 5, 2011

The San Antonio Hope, Steps & A Cure Walk was a huge success!

There were 168 registered walkers, 9 walk teams, and over $25,000 was raised from this event!

The day started out with clouds and a lot of wind, but by the time the walk program kicked off, it was all blue skies and sun.

After walkers checked in, they could enjoy a few snacks, sign up for the silent auction and raffle, listen to the music of a mariachi band and other young performers, and connect with other patients and families.  The children who attended even had their own Kids Zone, complete with a moon bounce and face painting.  In addition, team pictures were taken, and the San Antonio Spurs Coyote mascot joined us for fun and pictures.  All walkers wore red Hope, Steps & A Cure shirts -- except for survivors, who wore yellow shirts.

The Coyote mascot helped us start our walk along the beautiful and scenic Museum Reach section of Riverwalk.  Walkers could choose between a 1-mile or a 2-mile walk.  As walkers strolled along the route, new friends were made.

After the walk, everyone enjoyed a light lunch, followed by the walk program which included recognitions of sponsors and top fundraising teams.  We also heard the compelling and moving stories from a survivor, Carmen Romo de Vivar, and from the mother of a survivor, Patty Sprain.

It was a wonderful day of spreading awareness for bone marrow failure disease, raising money for the programs and services of AA&MDSIF to benefit patients and families, and connecting with other patients and families.

Thank you to our walk committee: Monica Fairchild, Stephanie Hamm, Carmen Romo de Vivar, Ginger & Haley Caron, and Patty Sprain who worked tirelessly on organizing a tremendously successful event!  Thank you to all our wonderful community volunteers who helped our event run so smoothly!  Thank you to our patients, families, and friends of AA&MDSIF who walked together for Hope, Steps & A Cure!
