7 Fast Facts To Share with Friends and Colleagues As You Raise Awareness about Bone Marrow Failure Diseases
- AA&MDSIF created AA&MDS Week Dec 1-7 to raise awareness about acquired bone marrow failure diseases that are diagnosed in more than 15,000 people each year in the US alone, with tens of thousands people more living with these life threatening diseases around the world.
- AA&MDSIF provides answers, support and hope to more than 50,000 patients and families fighting bone marrow failure diseases across the US and worldwide.
- Aplastic anemia happens when your bone marrow stops making enough blood-forming stem cells.
- Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) happen when your blood-forming stem cells are defective and fail to make enough healthy blood cells.
- Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemglobinuria (PNH) happens when your red blood cells break apart due to a genetic change in your blood-forming stem cells.
- There is still no perfect cure for these diseases. Effective treatments range from transfusions and drug-therapies, to a bone marrow transplant for those who are healthy-enough, young-enough, and lucky-enough to have a matching donor.
- AA&MDSIF provides patients and families with educational information and support services, while we are funding and promoting research in pursuit of better treatments and cures.
