John Huber
Executive Director

John brings to the Foundation more than 33 years of leadership experience with associations, foundations and non-profit organizations. John joins the AA&MDSIF after serving as Executive Director of the American Urological Association Foundation. Prior to serving with the AUAF, John served for eight years with Goodwill Industries International, most recently as its Vice-President of Membership Support Services. He also served as the National Executive Director for the Lupus Foundation of America. During his tenure with these three organizations, he developed a track record of creating and implementing new governance models and strategies, securing financial resources for patient education and research programs, expanding membership, and deploying "member service" driven concepts.

Leigh Clark
Patient Educator

Leigh joined the AA&MDSIF as a Patient Educator.  She communicates with patients and families all over the world by telephone or email, providing information, support, and hope.  Leigh helps patients, family members, caregivers, and medical professionals by answering questions about bone marrow failure diseases and treatments, finding financial resources, and  providing them with educational materials.  She brings to the foundation over 18 years experience as a patient advocate, most recently with United Cerebral Palsy of Southern MD.   

Martha Crews
Program Support Specialist

Martha assists in our patient education, development, research and management programs. She has prior experience in market research, operations and customer service programs and has over 12 years leadership experience with the International MOMS Club. She also holds several prominent positions in local and county-wide PTA organizations. Martha is a graduate of Northwestern University.


Alice Houk
Director of Health Professional Programs

Alice manages the research grant program, monitors newly published research and drug company announcements, coordinates the Scientific Symposium, serves as liaison to the Medical Advisory Board and is the primary contact with other professional and patient organizations. She also leads efforts in educating health professionals about bone marrow failure diseases.  Her nonprofit experience includes having served as a national organizer for the SAFE KIDS campaign and as a regional program coordinator for the March of Dimes. In addition, Alice has extensive experience working with volunteers in educational, fund raising and program areas. She holds a Master's degree in Health Policy from the University of Maryland.

Benita Marcus
Director of Information and Advocacy

With extensive experience in information and Web site management and development for nonprofit organizations, Benita leads efforts to enhance the Foundation Web site.  She also spearheads the development of all web-based services, including our eInsider, an education portal and online activism tools. Benita manages government advocacy campaigns for the Foundation including the Bone Marrow Failure Disease and Treatment Act.

Desiree Ruiters
Database Support Specialist
ruiters@aamds.org 
With an accounting and real estate background, Desiree handles our financial processes and manages our member database.  She handles all information requests, ensuring that patients and families receive information and support in a timely manner.

Paul Scribner
Director of Patient Programs and Services
scribner@aamds.org
Paul leads the design, development and implementation of our patient educational materials, including our booklets, fact sheets and web-based services and programs. Paul comes to AA&MDSIF with more than 10 years experience in patient services including work with the Epilepsy Foundation of America, Very Special Arts and Montgomery General Hospital. He holds a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and is a licensed clinical social worker.  

Sandra Walter-Steinberg
Director of Development

With more than 20 years of nonprofit organization development and fundraising experience, Sandra leads our development efforts including annual and planned giving, major gifts, foundation and corporate support along with donor development. Sandra also has extensive experience in working with volunteers. She is a graduate of American University with a degree in Business Administration.
