Bone Marrow Failure Scientific Symposium

The first AA&MDSIF Bone Marrow Failure Scientific Symposium was held in October 2005 in Washington, DC.  A host of accomplished speakers from around the globe presented at this two-day symposium dedicated to bone marrow failure syndromes.

Major objectives of the Symposium were to compare and to contrast the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and treatments for these historically diverse syndromes that are now increasingly recognized to share both common mechanisms of disease and responsiveness to therapy.

Attendees, who traveled from more than fifteen countries, were stimulated to contribute collectively about development of new ideas through information exchange, animated discussions, and critical thought.  The meeting also served as an inspiration for the young researchers in attendance.

The Bone Marrow Failure Scientific Symposium was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health: Office of Rare Diseases; National Cancer Institute; and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.  The symposium was organized by the AA&MDSIF under the leadership of Marilyn Baker, Executive Director, and under the scientific direction of Jaroslaw Maciejewski, MD, PhD of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Taussig Cancer Center and Neal Young, MD of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; it is an excellent example of tripartite collaboration among government, academia, and pharmaceutical companies with special interest in these diseases and their amelioration.
